The Blue Tongue

The blue tongue is an exceptional characteristic among dog breeds, shared only with the Chinese Shar-Pei.

  • Chow-Puppies have a pink tongue at birth
  • the black-blue pigment should be complete by the age of 8 weeks (remaining pink spots constitute a serious fault)
  • the gums and lips are black
  • small bears in Tibet have a blue tongue too
  • Chows rarely show their tongues on command ... so don't ask!
In an old East Asian legend the question of its origin is answered by famous storyteller Li-Fu:

"When the world was being created and the stars set in their places, numerous pieces of the blue sky fell on the earth. Who was allowed to lick them up?

You guessed right! The Chow and that's how he got his blue tongue".
